Home > Your HAE Treatment

You are here because you have been prescribed Berinert, an HAE treatment given by intravenous (IV) injection. Read on to know a little more about how it works.

What is Berinert®?

As you may already know, HAE is a rare condition caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of an important protein found in the blood known as C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH).1–3 Berinert is a treatment given by IV injection to treat HAE by replacing this protein that is missing or not working properly in your blood.4,5

Your treatment can be used to treat acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) as they happen (what your doctor may call “on-demand”).4,5 You may also be prescribed a dose of your medicine before you have a medical, dental or surgical procedure to prevent an attack.4,5

Treatments containing C1 esterase inhibitors, like yours, can be used to treat two common types of HAE2,4,5

85%

Approximately 85% of people living with HAE have type I, where their body does not produce enough C1-INH.

15%

The other 15% of people living with HAE have type II, meaning their body produces C1-INH but it does not work properly.

If you are not sure which type of HAE you have, ask your HAE care team. But remember, whether it is type I or II, your medicine will work to reduce swelling when you have an HAE attack.

Self-administering your treatment

Some people may, with training, infuse their treatment on their own (or with some help from a friend or family member) at the first sign of an HAE attack. This means they can get relief when and where they need it.

If you self-administer, your HAE care team will show you how to administer your medicine properly.
